This is the companion blog to What I’m Practicing. The purpose of this blog is to invite you to share what you’re practicing, specifically what are you practicing in regards to jazz. My hope is that by sharing our insights and comments we can all grow.
Thanks for sharing.

Hey lynn, I hope all is well in denver. Pretty impressive stuff with the new website and the one track I’ve been able to hear. I had my first lesson here in buenos aires the other day and the teacher is having me work on a rhythmic study superimposing 3’s and 5’s over a 4/4 tune. For instance we’ll take a group of four 8th notes and a quarter note rest and play that through an entire chorus of blues. To create the 5 you just rest for an 8th note instead. But it’s really helping me a lot because you have to know where you are rhythmically as well as follow the changes in the original time signature. Later on of course we’ll move on to applying this type of phrasing over less standard sets of changes.

hearing what you guys are practicing makes me want to practice! Drummer I play with is all about super imposing 3’s and 5’s over 4/4 tunes, and I can hear when he is doing “something” but can’t really grasp how I would be able to do that myself.
I’ve been doing something simple lately. Putting a metronome on the 2 and 4 and practicing my feel. Either through playing a standard, or just playing free and trying to make it feel as good as possible. As Lynn said in one if these articles, feel is everything, means more than the notes most of the time that’s for sure
